I am an artist and designer pursuing pen and ink drawings and paper weaving. Patterns, grids, and textiles inspire my art. This current series of work focuses on relinquishing control in favor of serendipitous discovery. Large-scale pen and ink drawings are reduced into woven pieces, layered together to create a complex and intriguing experience that’s purely coincidental. The original monochromatic drawings blend and contrast both mechanical and organic mark-making. The use of the grid in my work is motivated by design principles, which has created a tool of unpredictability. I never know what the end product will be until it is complete. This tension creates a new visual vocabulary and an ongoing exploration of problem-solving and solution-finding.
The viewer is invited to see the deconstruction process that has transformed and reordered each abstract composition from seemingly random into orderly chaos. Throughout each piece, the dynamics of time, relationships, and the complexities of the mind are considered, alongside the elements of rhythm and repetition. Influential artists, including Agnes Martin, Sol Witt, and Charles Gaines, inspire the role of grids, semiotics, and the psyche in the art-making process as it pertains to control and intention.
